What’s A Hair Shampoo?
Shampoo is a hair care product that is used to cleanse the hair and scalp. The shampoo is typically made from a mixture of water, surfactants, and sometimes fragrances and other hair treatment oil. Surfactants are chemicals that help to reduce the surface tension of water, which allows the shampoo to more easily remove dirt and oil from the hair and scalp.
It is no secret that shampooing your hair has many benefits. Not only does it cleanse your scalp and hair of dirt, oil, and product build-up, but it also stimulates hair growth, prevents hair loss, and keeps your hair looking and feeling its best.
Why You Need To Produce Your Own Hair Shampoo
There are many reasons why you might want to produce your own hair shampoo. Perhaps you are concerned about the chemicals in store-bought hair shampoo, or you want to save a few bucks which can be used for other purposes. Maybe you want to go into commercial production to raise some cash. Whatever your reasons, producing your own hair shampoo can be a fun and rewarding experience.
One of the main benefits of producing your own hair shampoo is that you can control the ingredients. This means that you can avoid harsh chemicals and other potential irritants. You can also customize your shampoo to suit your specific hair type.
Another advantage of making your own shampoo is that it is often much cheaper than store-bought varieties. This is especially true if you use organic ingredients.
Finally, when you produce your own hair shampoo, it can be a great way to show off your creativity. You can experiment with different essential oils and other ingredients to create a unique scent and feel.

What Are The Chemicals Required For The Production Of Hair Shampoo?
When it comes to hair shampoo production, there are a variety of different chemicals that can be used. Chemicals used for the production of different hair shampoos vary; however, some of the chemicals still remain fundamental in any production, like the foaming agents, the thickener, etc.
Certain chemicals may be added or removed to achieve a certain goal or function in the hair shampoo final product. For example, some producers may add some specific essential oil to their products, some may use menthol in their production. It’s all a function of what you or your end users really desire at the end of the day.
Here is a look at some of the most common chemicals used in typical hair shampoo production:
List Of Chemicals For The Production Of Hair Shampoo
- Nitrosol

Description And Functions Of Important Chemicals In Hair Shampoo Production
If you are really serious about learning how to produce hair shampoo at home, it is very important you get yourself familiar with the various functions as well as descriptions of the main chemicals used in the production of the hair shampoo.
Nitrosol

Nitrosol is a whitish substance with a very smooth texture like a powder. It is the main thickening agent, and also a binder in hair shampoo production. It is also an important chemical in the production of Liquid Soap and Car Wash Liquid Soap.
Soda Ash Light

Soda ash is one of the key ingredients in many shampoos and hair care products. It is a white powder that acts as a mild cleansing agent and also helps to adjust the PH of products.
Soda ash is used in shampoos to help remove buildup from the hair and scalp. It can also help to control or adjust the pH of the shampoo, which is important for maintaining healthy hair and preventing scalp problems.
Soda ash is a safe and effective ingredient in shampoo, and it is important to use a shampoo that contains it if you want to keep your hair healthy and free of buildup.
For our shampoo production, Soda Ash Light is used. In case it is not available, you can still use Soda Ash Dense. They all serve the same function; the major difference between the two is that Soda Ash Light has finer grains or particles and is also more soluble in water. Whereas Soda Ash dense is coarser and takes more time to dissolve in water.
Sulphonic Acid

Sulphonic acid is an organic compound with the chemical formula RSO3H. It is an oily, liquid that is soluble in water and has a strong odour.
Sulphonic acid is a powerful cleaning agent that is used in a variety of shampoos and hair care products. It is known for its ability to remove oil and dirt from the hair and scalp and is often used as a degreaser. Sulphonic acid is also used in a variety of industrial applications, such as metal degreasing and oil removal, production of liquid soaps, and manufacture of detergents, surfactants, and emulsifiers.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)

Sodium lauryl sulfate, also called ‘Rice’ (which looks like rice grains) is a detergent that is used in many shampoos and hair care products. It is an inexpensive and effective way to cleanse the hair and scalp. It is known for its ability to create a foamy lather
If you’re looking for a detergent that’s good at cleaning hair, you can’t go wrong with (SLS). This common ingredient is found in shampoos, body washes, and other cleansing products. As a surfactant, it means it helps water to penetrate surfaces and dissolve dirt and oil.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is an effective cleanser because it’s good at breaking up oil and dirt. That’s why it’s often used in industrial cleaners, like engine degreasers and floor cleaners. It’s also why you’ll find it in dishwashing detergents and laundry detergents.
While sodium lauryl sulfate is good at cleaning, it can also be harsh if in excess. It is important to use a shampoo that contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate sparingly.
Foam Booster

Most shampoos contain foaming agents known as surfactants. When you work up a lather in your hands, the surfactant molecules align themselves at the interface between water and air and trap dirt and oil in the process.
But there’s another ingredient in some shampoos that helps create an even richer lather: a foam booster. Foam boosters are usually added in very small amounts, but they can make a big difference in the amount of foam your shampoo produces.
Foam booster is typically made from coconut oil or other fatty acids. These ingredients help to create a dense foam that can easily remove dirt and oil from the hair. Foam booster also helps to prevent the shampoo from drying out the hair.
There are a variety of different foam boosters used in the production of hair shampoos, but the most common one is called Cocamidopropyl betaine. This ingredient is derived from coconut oil, and it’s what gives many shampoos that characteristic coconut smell.
Foam booster is an important component in hair shampoo production. It is responsible for creating the rich lather that consumers expect from their shampoo. Without foam booster, shampoo would not be able to cleanse the hair very effectively.
While foam booster is essential for creating a good lather, it is important to use it sparingly. Too much foam booster can cause the shampoo to strip the hair of its natural oils. This can leave the hair feeling dry and brittle.
Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP)

Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) is a white granular or crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water. It is a salt of phosphoric acid and is very alkaline. Sodium tripolyphosphate is used as a detergent, builder and emulsifier in many industries. STPP is also found in many household cleaners
STPP is an essential ingredient in the production of hair shampoo. It is used to increase the viscosity of the shampoo and also functions as a foaming agent. STPP also has the ability to bind to hair proteins, which helps to keep the shampoo from being rinsed away too quickly.
Menthol

Menthol is a white crystalline substance with a minty smell, which is obtained from the essential oil of mint plants. It has a refreshing, cooling effect on the skin and is often used in topical preparations such as ointments, creams, and lotions.
Menthol is a popular ingredient in the production of hair shampoo, conditioner, and other hair products. It has a refreshing and cooling effect on the scalp, which can help to reduce scalp irritation. Menthol is also a good antiseptic and can help to control dandruff.
Menthol is not soluble in water (water at room temperature), it can, however, dissolve in any alcohol.
Glycerine

Glycerine is a clear, odourless liquid that is derived from fats and oils. It is one of the essential ingredients in the soap-making process and is also found in many cosmetics and personal care products.
Glycerine is a humectant, meaning it attracts and holds moisture. This property makes it an ideal ingredient in hair care products, particularly shampoos.
Glycerine helps to keep the hair hydrated and prevents the hair from drying out. It also helps to protect the hair from damage and keep it looking healthy. Glycerine is often used in conjunction with other moisturizing ingredients, such as mineral oil.
When used in the production of shampoo, Glycerine can help to make the hair softer, shinier, and more manageable.
Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is a natural oil that is extracted from the seeds of the Vitamin E plant. The oil is then refined for use in various cosmetics and skin care products. The oil has a light golden colour and a slightly nutty smell. It is non-greasy and is absorbed quickly by the skin.
It is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a role in maintaining the structure of cell membranes. It is also an antioxidant, which means it helps protect cells from damage.
Often used in hair shampoos to help nourish and protect the hair. The oil can help to repair damage to the hair shaft, and it can also help to prevent further damage from occurring. Vitamin E Oil also functions well in improving the elasticity of the hair, making it less likely to break.
Colour

There are many different colours that can be used in hair shampoo production. The most common colours are orange, blue, green, purple, and pink. Each of these colours can be used to create different looks. Ensure your choice colour is water soluble.
Adding colour to shampoo can be a great way to add some personality to your product. It can also be a great way to make your shampoo stand out on the shelves.
Perfume

When it comes to hair care, there are a lot of different options in the market. However, one of the most popular choices among consumers is perfume-infused hair shampoo.
By adding a small amount of perfume to the shampoo formula, can help to give the shampoo a pleasant scent, which can make the hair smell great after it is washed.
In addition to smelling great, perfume-infused hair shampoo can also help to make the hair look shinier and feel softer. This is because the perfume helps to coat the hair shaft, which can make it appear more lustrous.
Essential Oil

If you’re looking to give your hair a little extra love, consider using essential oils in your shampoo. Essential oils can help to promote hair growth, prevent hair loss, and keep your scalp healthy.
There are a few different ways you can add essential oils to your shampoo. You can add a few drops to your regular shampoo, or you can make your own shampoo using essential oils as the main ingredients.
If you’re going to add essential oils to your regular shampoo, start by adding just a few drops. You can always add more if you find that your hair needs it. These are some of the best essential oils for hair health:
Rosemary essential oil: Rosemary oil is known for its ability to stimulate hair growth. It can also help to prevent hair loss.
Lavender essential oil: Lavender oil is a good choice if you’re looking to prevent hair loss. It can also help to soothe the scalp and to fight dandruff.

Safety Precautions During The Production Of Hair Shampoo
When it comes to safety in the production of hair shampoo, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First and foremost, always follow the manufacturers’ instructions when handling any chemicals or other potentially hazardous materials. This will help to ensure that you are using the products safely and correctly.
More so, it is important to have good ventilation in the area where you are carrying out the production. This will help to reduce the risk of exposure to fumes and other airborne contaminants.
Also, ensure a very good illumination in the production area.
Do not carry out production that is related to chemicals near an open flame. Most chemicals are very flammable.
Do not taste any chemical, no matter how sweet the smell is.
Keep all chemicals or chemical products out of reach of children.
Finally, ensure you wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with any chemicals. This includes gloves, goggles, and a respirator or nose mask if needed.
By following these simple safety precautions, you can help to ensure a safe and successful hair shampoo production process.
Step-By-Step Guide For The Production Of 10 Liters Volume Of Hair Shampoo
- Our total volume is about 10 litres, so measure out 10 Liters of clean water. This is all the water we will use for production.
- First, gently pour and dissolve the Soda Ash Light in 1liter of water and keep aside. (Stir as you do this)
- Dissolve the Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in 1 litre of water, in a separate container, and keep it aside. Kindly take your time to do this, to ensure it is well dissolved. Remember you should also be stirring to quicken the process.
- Thirdly, in an entirely different container, dissolve the Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) in 1 litre of water. Stir very well until it dissolves, then keep it aside too.
- In about half-litre of water, dissolve your water-soluble colour and keep it aside like the others above.
- Ensure steps 2, 3 & 4 are well dissolved. Leave them for about 1 hour before commencing step number 7.
- Now pour six (6) litres of water into our main mixing bowl. Gently add the Nitrosol into the water while you stir continuously. You need to stir very well to avoid lumps formation. This should take you up to 10 minutes or more. You will also begin to feel the mixture thickens.
- Pour the Soda Ash Light solution into the mixture of Nitrosol and water in the main mixing bowl. Stir while you pour. Mix the both very well for about 5 minutes or more.
- Next, add the Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) solution into the mixing bowl. Use a mesh strainer or sieve to ensure all entrapped particles are removed from the SLS solution when pouring it into the mixing bowl. Also, stir for about 5 minutes or more.
- Pour the Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) solution next into the main bowl. You can also pour it through a strainer or sieve to remove entrapped or undissolved particles just like in the step above. Don’t forget to stir well as you pour, and do well to stir the mixture for about 5 minutes or more. Patience is key!
- It’s time to add our Sulphonic acid. This is also a foaming agent. Foam will begin to form as you stir the mixture in the bowl. Keep stirring for about 10 to 15 minutes until most of the foam lather gradually disappears.
- Now, add your Glycerine and stir very well until it blends with the mixture.
- Next, add the Vitamin E oil also and stir very well.
- In a very small container, dissolve your Menthol crystal in your Perfume. You will be stirring it until it dissolves. Now gradually pour the dissolved content into the main mixing bowl. Note: pour gradually, while you gently stir.
- Pour your dissolved colour into the mixing bowl and stir the entire contents very well. Overall quantity should be as desired!
- And finally, essential oils are optional but they can add a nice scent to your shampoo and also have some beneficial properties for your hair. For example, lavender oil is calming and can help with dandruff, while rosemary oil is invigorating and can promote hair growth.
- Cover the entire hair shampoo product for about 12 hours or more before packaging. Congratulations! You have just produced hair shampoo at home!
